Since SRGE has announced the Battle For Seattle, our tournament director
Julian has been besieged by requests for more details! We know that
the tournament community is alive and well, but as part of our mission,
we want to make sure that people who have never been in a tournament
before can come in with some of the basic rules and structure in mind,
so Julian put together basic primer to answer your questions. As always if you have more questions, hit us up on our twitter or facebook feeds!

After the jump, we've post the basic tournament guide. We also recommend you check out the main tournaments link at the top of this page, which has also been updated with the times for each tournament (you can also find a link to this guide)

~SRGE Staff

        Basic Tournament Guide

Players are strongly encouraged to pre-register: It ends up
being $5 cheaper, will help the event organizers plan ahead better, and
the players also get TWICE the number of raffle drawing tickets if they
pre-register as opposed to paying their venue fee at the door.

Players must bring their own wired controller. Wired pads are
fine, but if you don't have a controller and you are called to your
match, you have 5 minutes to be ready to play or face disqualification.
So be prepared and stay near your tournament area!

Wireless controllers are not allowed.

Paying at the door however
is perfectly fine.

All players, whether pre-registered or not, should go immediately to the
sign in table. This way they can get their raffle tickets, get their
name badge, and pay for all the tournaments they will participate in.

Tournament fees are as follows:

$10 for all games except for the older games
---Older Games are $5: SuperTurbo, Vampire Savior, and MvC2.

100% of all tournament fees go to the winners, the venue is paid by the venue fee

The prize pots will be split 70/20/10 amongst the top three placers in all games.

Battle
For Seattle tournaments will follow a double elimination tournament
format. This means that every player starts out in the winner's
bracket, and continues until their first loss, where they enter the
loser's bracket and play other players who have lost once. If you lose
against two different opponents, you are out of the tournament. Matches
will generally follow the Evolution tournament rules and format.

Players
who are not currently involved in a tournament are encouraged to go
across the hall and check out the Freeplay Zone which has many classic
consoles on freeplay, and also the main hall which will have tons of
games and systems and miscellanea for sale and trade. These are all
included in your venue fee, so take advantage of them!

Some first time tournament player tips:
-Watch
your belongings at all times. With hundreds of people around it is
always a good idea to keep track of your things, especially when they
are all game console items that look identical. It is a GREAT idea to
use blue or masking tape on your stick to write your name, email, and
phone number in case your stick is misplaced. Breakaway cables also
CONSTANTLY get lost at tournaments, so make sure your cable is with you.

-For
many new players, pausing mid-match can be a problem. If you pause,
your opponent can choose to make you forfeit that round if he or she
chooses. So make sure you are careful with your mashing, or if you have
a TE stick to use the TOURNAMENT LOCK switch.

-Be early to get some casual practice in, you usually don't want your first game of the day to be your first match.

-Make
sure you know who is in charge of the part of the bracket you are in.
That volunteer will tell you who you play against, and at which station.
When you are not playing a match, make sure to stay in that general
area so that you can hear if you are called.

-Play your best, and remember to have fun!

It's finally time for the northwest's first retro gaming expo of the year as Kelso hosts the 2nd annual Cowlitz Gamers for Kids convention! Organized by PRGE's John H., this expo will feature many of the same vendors from both the Portland and Seattle retro gaming expos.

There be great deals on hundreds of classic video games, consoles and accessories, as well as console freeplay and some fun tournaments. There will even be appearances by two of the finalists from the 1990 Nintendo World Championships, Thor Aackerlund and Robin Mihara.

But the best part about the Cowlitz expo is that by attending, you will be helping out a great charity! For the second straight year, 100% of admission proceeds will go to the Children's Justice and Advocacy Center, which helps abused children in Cowlitz county.

Enjoy an exciting day with your fellow classic gamers, and help out a good cause.
